Miracast Wi-Fi (2012)

Connecting video devices in a guestroom, or even in other locations throughout hotels has always been problematic.  The right connector always seems to be missing, or the available input/output jacks aren't compatible.  Learn about a new industry standard from the Wi-Fi Alliance that should help make those issues a thing of the past.


Miracast™ is a solution for seamlessly displaying video between devices, without cables or a network connection. Users can do things like view pictures from a smartphone on a big screen television, share a laptop screen with a conference room projector in real-time or watch live programs from a home cable box on a tablet. Miracast connections are formed using Wi-Fi Direct™, so access to a Wi-Fi® network is not needed.  The technology is particularly suited for hotel applications because it works across a variety of devices, regardless of brand. Connections are easy to set up and use since the devices choose the appropriate settings automatically.

802.1x Security Standard (2012)

For well over the last decade, security has played a major role in any LAN and Wireless-LAN infrastructure. One of the earlier security concerns that many industries had was how can they authenticate a user or a device before it gains access to a network medium. IEEE developed the 802.1x standard to address these security concerns. The 802.1x standard (Port-Based Network Access Control) takes advantage of some of the physical properties of the IEEE 802 standard and creates an Authentication, Authorization and Accounting framework.


The 802.1x standard was initially created to address access control on the LAN. However, because wireless networks were quickly becoming the preferred medium and thus extending a company network infrastructure, IEEE later modified the 802.1x standard to include 802.11/WLAN. As more and more industries, especially the hospitality industry, extend their networks (LAN and WLAN) into public areas, the network infrastructure needs to have a security mechanism to control access where a user/device is allowed to go and create an audit trail. This webinar includes a brief history of 802.1x, the components of its framework, how it works, the advantages and disadvantages, and how it can be incorporated into an existing infrastructure. The targeted audience for this webinar is anyone with basic to intermediate network knowledge who is looking to better understand this technology and how it can enhance their network infrastructure from a security perspective.

802.11u Wi-Fi (2012)

Mobile data requirements are doubling every year and are already starting to overwhelm data networks. Major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) worldwide have embraced offload to Wi-Fi as the only practical solution. However, roaming connections to Wi-Fi are rarely automatic or instantaneous, if available at all. The 802.11u specification addresses this problem by facilitating automated connections and handoff between cellular and Wi-Fi, and it potentially enables usage tracking for revenue sharing among roaming agreements. In addition, the 802.11u specification is really a next generation, improved WiSPr protocol. As such, the new specification will improve the usage, security, and roaming in hotspots like no technology before it.


Interest has continued to grow in the role of Wi-Fi in the public arena. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), struggling to cope with the deluge of data being sent to and from Wi-Fi enabled devices such as smartphones and mobile-connected tablets and notebooks, are considering Wi-Fi hotspots as a means of offloading their congested cellular services. MNO’s are also considering Wi-Fi as a tool for retaining customers and attracting new ones. Existing hotspot operators will be presented with opportunities to embrace new revenue streams and business models as the market evolves. The industry is addressing the primary shortcoming of the Wi-Fi hotspot (ease-of-use) with new technology and standards based on IEEE 802.11u which promises enhanced network selection and roaming capabilities that will make Wi-Fi as easy to use as a cellular service.

This webinar covers the how the 802.11u standard improves security, the ease of use for end users, and authentication of Wi-Fi hotspots; what the standard includes; and a projected timeline on the release.

Hospitality Optical Transport - GPON (2011) 
The bandwidth to support guests is ever-increasing and the convergence of multiple services over an IP infrastructure is adding to thatincreasing demand. Traditionally, copper has been used to provide the transport for the different services such as telephone, TV, and Internet access, but the increasing costs of copper coupled with the decreasing fiber-optic cable costs and increasing bandwidth demands, has made the use of optical fiber more attractive. This presentation will cover the different fiber deployment options like Active Ethernet and PON, the equipment required for each option, and an analysis of when a fiber deployment makes sense.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) Cellular Systems (2011)

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is the newest version of 4G cellular technology now being deployed, and it has important implications for hotel wireless network design and cellular coverage support.  More and more guests are using smart phones and tablet PCs to collaborate with colleagues and/or access personal content in the guest room.  How will the introduction of LTE-enabled smart phones and tablet PCs impact the guests' expectations of in-room entertainment services (i.e., voice, Internet access, and TV services)?  Cathy also discusses the impact of LTE on the hotel's existing LAN, WLAN, and cellular infrastructure.
