Active Workgroups

Active or chartered workgroups hold regular meetings (usually every 1-2 weeks) by tele/webconference, and most meet a few times a year at face-to-face Forum meetings.

  • Most workgroup charters will have durations of six to 18 months, but never longer than the period of time for which they have already defined specific deliverables, outcomes, and milestones.
  • Workgroups that do not complete their work within their defined charter period may be extended for a short period at the discretion of HTNG management at for a longer period with approval of the HTNG Board of Governors.
  • Chartered workgroups may be continually re-chartered as they are able to define successive stages of deliverables, but each new charter requires approval of the HTNG Board of Governors.

Above Property Systems This workgroup will create a detailed list of selection criteria that is required to successfully select and deploy an above property system (cloud) in the franchisee, ownership and management environment inherent to the hospitality industry.  This will decrease uncertainty and deployment times for cloud systems, and ensure that no capabilities are lost in the migration to the cloud. February 2017
Bulk Data API This workgroup will develop a standard for accessing and transferring large amounts of data, efficiently, accurately and reliably without the excessive overhead imposed by traditional XML formats. February 2017
 Cloud Communications Hotel communications (messaging, voice, work orders) require separate systems that require (or do not support) significant integration requirements that result in staff needing many devices (phone, radio, tablet), which are difficult to support.  This group will focus on the integration requirements, management, and deployment needs of a modern hotel.  This will reduce costs, support requirements while increasing operational efficiency(s). August 2017 
Door Lock Security This workgroup is creating best practices for deployment of assorted door lock solutions due to the lack of credible information that hotels cause to evaluate physical access control (locking) solutions.  This group has completed a threat model and a security validation program overview. Q4 2016

Event RFP

Addressing the automated delivery of RFPs from meeting planners, through intermediary systems, directly into hotel sales and catering systems.

Open Travel 2.0 Release + 6 Months

Fiber to the Room  This workgroup is updating the Fiber to the Room Design Guide to include innovative methods of power distribution for fiber optics, enabling remote power solutions like power-over-ethernet. Q1 2017 
Lightweight Messaging Creating a JSON framework that reflects existing HTNG & Open Travel Specifications that would selectively allow the client to return a specified set of data elements. December 2016
 Next Generation Distribution Messaging HTNG and The OpenTravel Alliance are mainstays of hotel and travel messaging and offer widely adopted message standards for operations and bookings across a diverse ecosystem of partners and internally within many companies.  Currently, new standards are emerging.  This workgroup will identify and examine both open source and proprietary standards, including OpenTravel’s 2.0 Object Model and IATA’s NDC, and offer a point of view with potential benefits, impacts and alignment opportunities.  TBD
Payments Workgroup

The Workgroup released a version 1.0 Framework in February 2013 and has published an updated Framework, version 2.0 in 2016. The group continues addressing the Secure Payments landscape. They will publish a white paper on cloud based PMS, update all HTNG Specifications and Frameworks that deal with payments, and offer strategies to avoid the use of PAN as a record identifier.

Personal Area Networks The team will document the network requirements and best practices needed to replicate the home network environment in the hotel. This will enable common consumer devices (meant for the home network) to be used by guests on the hotel's network, enabling common use case scenarios such as displaying guest-based content on the hotel-owned television. August 2016
Personally Identifiable Information (PII)   The team will begin by defining what PII means within the hospitality industry. they will create principles and corresponding rationale for protecting guest data, a code of conduct in which an organization and it's vendors will abide by. Finally, they will produce a self assessment to test how well a given organization is protecting the personal information of their guest. This will lead to the eventual standard that all within the industry will perform to. A later output will focus on protecting personal information of staff and vendors. June 2017

New Builds

Develop comprehensive architectural and design guidelines as well as commissioning check lists that will ensure that proper technologies can be deployed when the building is commissioned. The workgroup would then socialize those guidelines with the architects, consultants and engineers that design hotels.  Design guidelines were completed in Q2 2016 TBD - meeting to discuss next steps

Scalable Cellular Service

This group will develop technology overviews for new and emerging technologies such as enterprise scale small cells and Wi-Fi Calling, evaluate deployment and use cases, and select business models that enable hotels of all sizes to ensure excellent cellular reception in their hotels. October 2016
